No Regrets
When asked, why Family Love Letters and why now, at the top of the list of reasons people give is wanting a great experience for their parents. But once the letter's been written, they exhale and admit that they had wanted to avoid regret. As one client (who with her husband gifted a letter to each of their parents) put it, "I couldn't in good conscience not do it (i.e. preserving their life stories) knowing it's a possibility...
I would way more regret not doing it."
For the most part, this client knew the stories, but wanted these letters from the grandparents for her young kids. She believes that when the kids are older and interested in their roots, their grandparents may not be there to share the memories.
The timing was spot on. "My father-in-law passed away suddenly at the end of August. It's been a very sad whirlwind, but we are finally getting our bearings. We are so thankful that he finished his letter and we got to read it. It's especially poignant."
I can't tell you how often I hear people share that they had wished they had gotten the stories down before it was too late. It's heartbreaking. There's no space for regret and no time to waste. Seize the moment while you still can.
