Timing is Everything

Tom and Emily asked their dad to record his stories. Amy wants her mom to do the same. Same goes for Len and his mother.

To their surprise, their parents all said, "Not right now." To put it in context, one of these parents is just getting over Covid; one is going through cancer treatment and the other just moved into assisted living. All of these disruptions are projects in and of themselves. Starting a new one -- no matter how positive -- feels like too much.

Not right now does not mean no. Timing is everything.

Each of these parents like the idea of preserving their stories, but first things first. Once they're fully recovered from Covid, through with their treatment and settled into their new home, then they'll be able to lift their head and begin something new and enjoy it.

That's your cue to get the story ball rolling.

You don't have to wait to plant the seed. If your parent is going through something big, tell them that you'd like this, but know that it has to wait. It'll be something for everyone to look forward to.

If you want to talk about how and when to talk to your parent about getting their stories down, I'd be happy to talk it through with you.
